Children see and make sense of things around them even before they learn their ABCs. The earliest and most vivid memories aren't made of sentences, but of colors, light, and shapes, a world built of images long before we had the words to describe it. Images hold a special power; they can speak to us instantly and profoundly.
For its 35th anniversary, Ang INK presents an exhibit that celebrates the illustrator as potent storyteller. Carefully crafted images replace text, giving tangible form to nebulous moods, emotions, and ideas. In artists' hands, human experiences are translated into a visual language that even the youngest members of our community can "read."
Inspired by picture books, Stories We Tell asks a question: "What do you see?" Presenting only the beginning and end, it playfully invites us to tell the tale in between. Devoid of words dictating what happens, the child becomes narrator in the unfolding of the story. In the process, images take hold and the imagination takes flight!
